Being able to spot these common lawn diseases early is important to prevent them from spreading and causing even more damage. Here is a list of the common lawn diseases in our area and how to prevent them.

Brown Patch:

Brown patch is a fungus that thrives when the weather is hot and humid. It can infect most grass types, appearing as circles that are 3-10 feet across. The fungus lives under debris, leaves, and thatch and can emerge when conditions are right. To keep brown patch under control only water when it’s needed and only do it in the early morning so the grass has time to dry.

Powdery Mildew:

Powdery mildew is a common lawn disease in the late spring and early fall especially in shaded areas. Affected grass takes on a white, chalky appearance. To prevent powdery mildew, consider overseeding with shade-tolerant grasses.

Dollar Spot:

Dollar spot is another fungus caused by wet weather. It is most common during big temperature swings such as the spring or fall. The fungus begins as small round patches of dead grass around the size of a silver dollar. As it spreads, it merges with other dollar spots to create large patches of dead grass. Aeration may be the only option if you see dollar spot in your yard.

Red Thread:

Red thread is most common in spring and fall when temperatures are cool. It can affects bluegrass, ryegrass, bentgrass, and fine fescue. It appears as red or pink web-like substance that will kill your grass if action is not taken in time. To prevent red thread, water early in the day to prevent a wet lawn at night.
